The Ice Is Falling
![]()
"The Sky Is Falling" is an ancient expression derived from a character called Chicken Little who concludes the sky is falling after an acorn hits him in the head.
If Chicken Little* were alive today, what would he say after reading these quotes taken from some recent articles in the news? Did the modern-day acorn just drop?
* Assuming Chicken Little wasn't culled.
"the world's oceans could easily be a metre higher by 2100"
"If anything this is a conservative estimate of what could happen in the future"
"The melting is going to happen faster than we thought. It's already begun to happen"
"As humans, everything we've done is set up for a stable climate. We've built huge cities within a metre of sea level and never thought they would be swamped"
"We could be past the point of no return for Greenland this century"
"It's not a gradual change. It's like flipping a switch. Areas that haven't experienced melt in centuries suddenly do"
"Once we're above two times the pre-industrial levels of carbon dioxide we're in the danger zone"
"I think sea-level rise is a huge threat"
"All the things we were worrying about happening did happen and it didn't take that much warming"
